If people can clearly tell

If people can clearly tell when things are not going well for you, it’s time to get your emotions in check. Life is not predictable. Plans will not always run as smoothly as expected, but it is important that you maintain your composure during these times. Don’t let your beliefs have power over the situation. If you allow sadness, anger or fear to take over, you will find it more difficult each time to bounce back after a set-back. Get to know your emotional triggers; what makes you angry, sad or afraid and then create a plan for coping with them when they arise.

4. Be Flexible With Your Plans.

Being too rigid and unwavering with plans can lead to disappointment. While setting plans and goals are ideal for making success happen, you have to accept that sometimes you may have to alter those plans.

Fearless Spearing's ready for big time

Fearless Spearing’s ready for big time

0 Comments | Daily Post; Liverpool (UK), Jul 23, 2010 | by Ian Doyle

FAILURE at the penultimate hurdle of last season’s Europa League effectively signalled the end of an era at Anfield.

But Jay Spearing hopes his own semi-final disappointment could yet prove the catalyst for a long-awaited breakthrough into regular first-team reckoning at the club.

While Liverpool fell short to Diego Forlan and Atletico Madrid, on-loan Spearing was aiding Leicester City’s scrap to win promotion to the Premier League.

The Foxes secured a place in the play-offs and subsequently became embroiled in a memorable semi-final against Cardiff City. Having lost the first leg 1-0 at home, Nigel Pearson’s side won a dramatic second leg 3-2 in the Welsh capital to force the tie to penalties.

Spearing appeared in both games and was next in line to take a spot kick before Martyn Waghorn missed to deprive the midfielder and his temporary team-mates a Wembley showdown with Blackpool.

Heartbreak. But nevertheless, the 21-year-old is eager to build on that experience and press his claims under new Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson.

“I really enjoyed it, it was very good,” says Spearing of his two- month spell at the Walkers Stadium.

“It was a massive difference from Liverpool. I’ve been here since I was seven, and going to Leicester they did everything completely differently.

I had to get used to it.

“Playing games week in week out helped me a lot, and with the expectation of reaching the play-offs and the pressure of those games, it was a great experience.

“It was a massive disappointment for the club not to reach the play-off final, and a massive disappointment for the lads there because we had worked hard during the final stages of the season. Overall, I thought we deserved more than we got on the day.

“It has made me a bit of a better player to go out and see what you should be fighting for every week. Now I want that hunger at my hometown club.

“I hope appearing in the play-offs has shown that I can handle big-time, big pressure games. Games with a high pressure that you really need to win. At Liverpool, it’s like that every week no matter who we are playing.”

Spearing was given his break in the Liverpool first team by Rafael Benitez in the Champions League against PSV Eindhoven in December 2008 and signed a new three-year contract seven months later.

However, despite making his first Premier League start against Sunderland last October, he was restricted to just five outings last season and was allowed out on loan to gain much-needed senior experience.

And having had a taste of regular action in the cut and thrust of an important battle, Spearing admits the coming season may prove make or break for his Anfield career.

“This is a big year for me,” he says. “With a new manager coming in, I have thought this could be my chance to break in and become a solid part of the first-team squad and be regularly involved.

“Obviously, at the end of the day it’s down to me whether that happens.

If that comes, then it comes.

But if not, then we’ll look at my options.

“But my target for this season is straightforward. I want to break into Roy’s plans.

“With the squad they have now introduced for the Premier League, I want to get into that and be involved. I want to be playing more games this season.”

Certainly, the new manager has wasted no time in making his presence felt during Liverpool’s pre-season retreat in the picturesque Swiss town of Bad Ragaz.

“You can tell straight away that Roy means business,” says Spearing. “He has laid his laws down about the way he wants things doing, and I do like it a lot.

“I just hope I can keep going and stay in his thoughts.

“If you do something wrong, he is not shy to tell you. If the session he puts on is not going the way he planned, then he is not shy to tell the lot of us.

“He is very good on explaining exactly what he wants

The fire chief may have a fire investigator on staff. However, in some smaller communities, it may be the chief himself. Depending on the severity of the case, the fire chief or investigator may call in more experienced county, state or federal investigators. “A prudent investigator won’t attempt to work alone but will instead use a team approach,” Corry says.

The career path for becoming a fire investigator may be as complex and varied as the job itself. Fire investigators working in the public sector typically come up through the ranks, starting out as employees or volunteers within fire or police departments, gaining experience in various aspects of fire behavior as well as criminal law, and sometimes in their free time, pursuing formal education and training.

Inside dengue's DNA

Inside dengue’s DNA

0 Comments | Palm Beach Post, Jul 28, 2010 | by DAPHNE DURET

Among the shopping centers and plush housing developments in the Port St. Lucie neighborhood of Tradition, researchers are working to eradicate a worldwide scourge.

Scientists at the Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute-Florida in Port St. Lucie and a related institution in Oregon have been researching dengue fever for years.

Now, as locally acquired cases of dengue are being reported in Florida for the first time in more than 75 years, VGTI’s leaders say they have discovered promising leads they hope will eventually lead to drugs to prevent or treat the deadly, mosquito-borne virus.

Dr. John Schatzle, manager of scientific affairs for VGTI Florida, said the recent cases in Key West have brought local attention to what his institute has already been researching vigorously.

“Think about it: People are going nuts over a few cases here in Florida, but 50 million people worldwide are getting this,” Schatzle said. “It’s one of those things that has such a global impact, even economically.”

The World Health Organization estimates that between 50 million and 100 million people contract the virus each year, mostly in the Caribbean, Latin America, Southeast Asia and Africa.

Dengue — which can cause high fever, pain behind the eyes, joint and bone pain, nausea and vomiting — is responsible for about 22,000 deaths worldwide annually. Foreign leaders have blamed dengue outbreaks for economic losses because of sick workers and decreased tourism.

Yellow fever comparison

Dr. Jay Nelson, CEO and executive director of Oregon Health and Science University’s Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute, has studied dengue fever’s effects for about five years in hopes of discovering a treatment or vaccine at the institute’s headquarters in Beavertown, Ore.

Locally, Dr. Rafick-Pierre Sekaly has been examining the human immune system’s responses to dengue fever compared with its response to yellow fever, a similar mosquito-transmitted virus for which an effective vaccine has existed since the mid-20th century.

But unlike yellow fever and a few other viruses, contracting and surviving a bout with one of the four strains of dengue fever could cause a heightened immune response if a patient encounters another strain of the virus later. Patients suffering subsequent infections can suffer stronger fevers and greater organ damage, muscle aches, inflammation and other symptoms, Schatzle said

Choppy trading ends with losses

NEW YORK- The Dow Jones industrial average dropped for a seventh straight day, its longest losing streak since the height of the financial crisis in October 2008. A disappointing jobs report added to investors’concerns that the economic recovery is losing steam.

The Dow ended down about 46 points Friday after the government said private employers added only 83, 000 jobs last month, fewer than the 112, 000 analysts had forecast.

The Dow and other major indexes posted big losses for a second straight week.

Light trading ahead of the long Independence Day weekend brought choppy moves, particularly in the final hour. The Dow was essentially flat in the last five minutes before sliding just before the close.

Investors are focused on business hiring because that makes up the bulk of the country’s work force.

The government also reported that factory orders fell in May for the first time in nine months. The 1.4 percent drop was the biggest since March 2009, when major stock indexes hit a 12-year low. The drop unnerved traders because manufacturing has been one of the strongest areas of the economy.

The Dow fell 46.05, or 0.5 percent, to 9, 686.48. The Dow hasn’t fallen for seven straight days since an eight-day loss that ended Oct

Dealmaker Simmons boosted by fresh investor confidence

0 Comments | Herald, The; Glasgow (UK), Jul 28, 2010 | by mark williamson

SIMMONS & Company has recorded a busy year after cashing in on an increase in investors’ confidence in the long term prospects for oil and gas firms.

The Aberdeen-based dealmaker recorded a 50% increase in activity in dealflow in the latest financial year when it advised on 20 transactions. These were worth $1bn (pound(s)645m) in total.

Around a third of the transactions involved Scottish firms. These included technology firm Red Spider and drilling services specialist International Tubular Services.

Simmons said more than half of the deals were cross-border transactions involving parties from Europe, North America, the Middle East and Australia.

“Bearing in mind the previous state of the oil price, economy and banking sector this time last year, we are very satisfied with the outcome,” said Colin Welsh, chief executive of Simmons & Company International.

He said the completed transactions list includes a balance of acquisitions, sales and finance raisings.

The companies concerned came from across the oil service sector, from drilling and completions to pipeline, process and oilfield services.

The firm is expecting activity to increase in the current year.

While the short-term outlook for the global economy appears to be uncertain, sector specialists believe that the rapid and unparalleled economic growth of countries like China will ensure that demand for oil and gas will remain strong in the near future.

This is likely to underpin M&A activity in the sector.

Whether one chooses to

Whether one chooses to make a simple, rectangular box design or one decides to be more elaborate, choosing to tool the wood with intricate designs, there is no wrong approach.

Performing a simple search for a humidor plan, one can find a wide variety of designs and plans, some for free and some for very inexpensive prices. If one so chooses, there are even plans on the internet for making a humidor out of Tupperware?. One can make any humidor from the traveling humidor to the glass top humidor to the cabinet humidor. The biggest question one must ask is how much time and effort does one want to invest in the finished product.

The major materials for starting ones own project include:
-Cherry or rosewood (for external sides of the humidor)

-Spanish cedar (for the interior finish)

-Hinges (for the top)

-Hygrometer (mounted externally for monitoring)

-Humidifier (for maintaining humidity levels)

-Propylene glycol and distilled water (to maintain humidity levels)

-Weather stripping material (to maintain a tight seal)

The basic process for making a humidor from wood with the hygrometer and the mechanical humidifier is as follow:

-Cut the cherry wood to make a bottom, the four sides and the lid

-Cut the Spanish cedar to fit inside the cherry and to be used as the internal lining

-Drill a hole in the front wall of the humidor to receive the hygrometer

-Place weather-stripping around the hole where the hygrometer will be inserted and mount the hygrometer

-Attach the walls and the bottom of the humidor according to the design.
